About 300 local town announcers in Borno state have been trained on the art of community mobilisation by the state's chapter of journalists Against Polio (JAP).
The town announcers are to help in the mobilisation efforts especially in the area of awareness creation for health related issues.
Selected from about five local government areas around Maiduguri, the participants were drilled by officials from the National Orientation Agency (NOA) on the kind of message they needed to pass across to members of their communities especially on the issue of polio vaccination.
These announcers are to from time to go round the focal communities to sensitise people on programmes like polio vaccination and other related child killer ailments.
The trainer from NOA, Mr Aliyu Zaifada urged the newly trained town announcers to carry on with their responsibility with serious commitment even as he urged them to consider their service as sacrifice for humanity and community.
He said they have to be prepared to embark on house to house sensitisation especially on the dangers of polio on towards the health of children that are not immunised.
The training was carried out for two days at Ramat Polytechnic, Maiduguri and the Education Resources Centre, Maiduguri.
Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Baba Shek Haruna who is a member of JAP commended the participants for their commitment and willingness to help improve the health of children within their community.
Earlier the Borno state Coordinator of JAP, Mrs Paulin Ibrahim noted that the idea of involving the local town criers is part of JAP's initiative towards making Borno state and environs free of polio virus.
She said JAP would continue to explore more and more practicable channels in ensuring that children and immunised and polio is completely eradicated.
She said the participants were drawn from Maiduguri, Jere, Monguno, Konduga, Mafa and Dikwa local government areas of Borno state.
Borno JAP has been in existence for about 10 years now with a large number of membership that cut across all strata of the media industry in the state.
